A new farmer's market opening inside a converted Hollywood steel factory is a mammoth undertaking, offering everything from locally grown produce to handmade soaps. With activities for the kids, a wine bar (on Thursday nights) and places to snack, it's also shaping up as a destination for all ages.

Young writers get a head start

A lot of budding authors and illustrators are walking the halls of Griffin Elementary School in Cooper City. <p/> For the past 12 years, the school has operated a volunteer-led Publishing Center that is run during school hours to help turn the writing of students into bound books.

Miramar launches new city-wide drug discount program

Miramar rolled out a free program Monday that gives residents an average of 20 percent off prescription drugs not covered by insurance. Hallandale Beach and Dania Beach launched the same program during summer 2009. Tamarac, Dania Beach, Lauderdale Lakes and Wilton Manors are also on board.

Broward pet of the week

Skittle, an 8-week-old long-hair mix, is as cute as a button. A little less than than two pounds, the black-and-white kitten was so tiny when she arrived at the Humane Society of Broward County that she needed special care from a pet foster family. Now, Skittle is back at the shelter and ready to be adopted by a family.
