Each year, the Broward School District must pay $56,760 to a private corporation to maintain 93 acres surrounding West Broward High School in Pembroke Pines — land that neither the students nor faculty will ever use.

The blind host of a public television show, a 94-year-old volunteer, the city of Pembroke Pines and The Miami Herald Broward Neighbors Section are among the winners of the 2009 Disability Awards presented by the Broward County Board of County Commissioners, the Broward County Advisory Board for Individuals with Disabilities and Intergovernmental Affairs and Professional Standards.
